Unlike other Caribbean Islands, Aruba is arid instead of lush and tropical. Though it is not what many visitors expect to find, it has a beautiful charm all its own.
A variety of cacti can be found all over Aruba because of the dry climate. Also to be found are the amazing divi divi trees with their sideways growth. This growth is due to the constantly blowing trade winds, which also makes them all point to the southwest.
Many visitors find the arid climate with the year-round 81 degree temperatures very suitable. The fact that Aruba is far enough south to be out of the hurricane belt is also a definite plus. This is the reason many couples who marry during hurricane season select Aruba for their honeymoons.
Aruba is like a two-sided coin. The resorts and casinos are located on the southwest side of the island. Here, the beautiful beaches have calm, peaceful waters and the shore is lined with palm trees. However, the other side of the island is very different. Rocky shores are pummeled by violent waves. This area is not very populated but such renowned natural wonders as the Natural Pool and Natural Bridge are found here. Unfortunately, September saw the collapse of the Natural Bridge under its own weight.
Activities offered in Aruba
If soaking up the sun while lounging on the beach is your idea of the perfect vacation, Aruba is for you. What could be better than sipping on a frozen drink while the trade winds cool you off even more.
Of course, if you don’t want to spend all your time lazing around on the beach, there are other things to do as well. If you would like to tour the landmarks of Aruba, this can be done by jeep or on horseback. Exploring cave paintings or swimming in the Natural Pool are possibilities, too.
The 400-foot German ship, Antilla, that was sunk during World War II is a great place for snorkeling or scuba diving. For those who are not quite that adventurous, Baby Beach may be more to your liking. It is almost like being in a pool
